Located 20 km from the city of Bonito, in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Gruta do Lago Azul has several speleothems and typical cave rock formations.

Inside, there is a stunning intense blue lake with 80 meters depth. Its dimensions make it one of the largest flooded cavities on the planet. At its bottom, it was found prehistoric animal fossils such as giant sloths and saber-toothed tiger.

Gruta do Lago Azul is listed as natural monument and preserve area due to its beauty and fragility.

You need to cross a trail with 100 meters slope and go down 300 steps in a rustic staircase to the lake bed.

Key information and tips

Up to 5 years children are allowed on the tour.

It is only allowed guided tour.

You can visit the place between September to February.

You have to wear a good pair of sneakers.

Secretary of Tourism of the city of Bonito offers schedule 7am tickets which must be request by email or at the office.
