One of the most famous historical monuments in the capital of Ceará, the Metropolitan Cathedral of Fortaleza (also known as São José Parish) is a temple of the Catholic religion and a rich example of romantic, gothic architecture. Opened in 1978, it took 40 years to be built and has the capacity to hold up to 5000 people.
Located in the Pedro II Square, better known as Praça da Sé (historic city center), it has imposing towers that are 75 m tall and full of colorful stained glasses, characteristics that command the attention of everyone passing by .
The project was signed off by the French architect Georges Maunier, who designed the temple in an eclectic style, with references to the Germany’s Cathedral of Cologne and the Cathedral of Chartres, in France.
Inside the Cathedral, you will find a high altar brought from Italy. You can also see the Cripta dos Adolescentes (Crypt of the Teenagers), so named in honor of Saints who died at young ages.
