Near Anchieta Palace, you can visit one of the most original churches in Vitória, capital of the state of Espírito Santo. With a colonial style and baroque features on its facade and altar, with gold-painted wood carvings, the São Gonçalo Church was classified heritage site by the Instituto do Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico Nacional (National Historic and Artistic Heritage Institute – Iphan) in 1948.
The history of the Church began in 1707, when the sisterhoods of Our Lady of Amparo and Our Lady of the Good Death built a small chapel on the site. Over the years, a demolition led to a true church, consecrated to São Gonçalo de Garcia. The new church was inaugurated in 1766.
Inside, there is always a guide, accredited by the city hall, to receive visitors and give information. You can also schedule a guided tour in the Church through the Projeto Visitar (Visiting Project), of Vitória City Hall.
