Chapada das Mesas

Navigating the Tocantins River is more than just an adventure. It’s a journey of discovery, connection, and admiration for nature.

Chapada das Mesas is a true treasure for those seeking incredible landscapes and memorable places to visit. An ecological sanctuary of 160 thousand hectares, where forests, red plateaus, and stunning rock formations meet. The city of Carolina, in the state of Maranhão, is the gateway for those who want to explore the region.

Chapada das Mesas

In addition to the Chapada das Mesas National Park, the destination offers stunning waterfalls and natural pools, nestled among the imposing rocky cliffs, making this place truly magical. There are more than 80 cataloged waterfalls in the region, such as the famous Prata and São Romão waterfalls.

If you go to the city of Carolina, you will have many attractions to fill your days. One of them is the Tocantins River, which borders the city of Filadélfia, in the state of Tocantins. You can enjoy the river on boat tours, swim, and even practice stand up paddleboarding.

Stand Up Paddleboarding

The large rigid boards, cutting through the waters thanks to the paddles, have made stand up paddleboarding – or just SUP, as it is known – popular among water sports enthusiasts. The sport can be practiced in different locations, such as lakes, lagoons, rivers, and even the sea.

But the experience becomes even more incredible when the scenery is breathtaking. And on the Tocantins River, you can practice SUP while enjoying an unforgettable sunset. You can’t miss out on this!

The tour starts in the late afternoon. Upon arriving at the river, you will meet the instructor who will give you all the instructions for the practice. If you have never stood on a board before, don’t worry! This is the moment when you will learn how to stand on the board. With the necessary safety equipment and life jacket, just start paddling.

An Incredible Sunset

With the sun setting on the horizon, you will embark on your board for an experience that promises to be memorable. With each paddle stroke, you will be enveloped by the tranquility of the river and the beauty that surrounds you, creating a perfect setting for an outdoor adventure.

Midway through the tour, the show begins. The sun begins to set, and the sky turns into that spectacular orange hue. On the horizon, you will see rocky formations with flat tops, shaped like huge tables.

Don’t hesitate to sit on the board for a while and admire this sunset. And, of course, don’t forget to take lots of photos of this moment, as it passes very quickly!

Stay Tuned!

The tour lasts on average two hours and can be done all year round. However, the best time to enjoy this experience is from June to December, as this is the dry season in the region. Besides the tour being more tranquil during this time, you will see an even more beautiful spectacle in the skies. And for those who do not speak Portuguese, it is possible to hire guides who speak English, Spanish, French, and even German.
