With lots of seafood dishes, the local cuisine in Maceió is not only delicious, but extremely varied. Visitors might want to begin their gastronomic tour with a moqueca de siri mole, a kind of stew made with soft-shelled crabs in coconut sauce. The perfect side dish for it is the traditional farofa, a mix of toasted cassava flour and several other possible ingredients.

Chiclete de camarão, shrimp with cheese

Chiclete de camarão (a shrimp dish in which all the melted cheese resembles chewing gum) is also a very popular dish in local bars and restaurants. Even though the recipe can be prepared in many different ways, the main ingredients are usually shrimp, cream cheese, mozzarella, parmesan, and blue cheese or provolone. This one should definitely be on your list!

Whoever visits the state of Alagoas must also try some sururu (charru mussels), a bivalve mollusk native to local mangroves. Tapioca, a delicious tortilla-like flatbread snack made with cassava starch, is widely appreciated amongst the locals. Inherited from indigenous communities, it is a sort of crepe that is served with several different possible fillings, savory or sweet. 

For those who can’t resist some delicious cookies with their coffee, they should definitely try the local goma biscuits, made with cornstarch, sugar, egg yolk, and coconut. When combined, all these ingredients become a delicious biscuit that will melt in your mouth.

Besides these fascinating dishes and snacks, visitors will be able to enjoy a wide variety of native fruit, such as pitanga (Brazilian cherry), graviola (soursop), cashew apples, cajá (yellow mombin), acerola (West Indian cherry), mangoes, jackfruit, pineapple, and mangaba (an oval, berry-shaped local fruit), all of which can be used to make ice cream, desserts, or juice.

Visitors will undoubtedly fall in love with the local food. On your trip, make sure you add the typical Alagoas breakfast to your experience. It includes cassava, couscous, tapioca, sun-dried beef, Brazilian curd cheese, eggs, and, of course, coffee and milk.
