The name Jalapão comes from the Jalapa do Brasil plant, which is easily found in the region.
Jalapão has even been a film set! Some Brazilian productions, such as “Deus é Brasileiro” and “Xingu”, had scenes filmed in the region.
Venture into the Brazilian Cerrado

Floating in the “fervedouros” (natural springs)
The “fervedouros” are unique attractions of Jalapão. These crystal-clear springs rise with such pressure from the underground aquifer that they prevent the body from sinking. Even trying, it is impossible to touch the bottom. The suspended sand creates an illusion of depth, making the experience even more intriguing. Some “fervedouros” reach depths of several dozen metres. Among the best known are Fervedouro do Ceiça and Fervedouro Bela Vista, must stop attractions for anyone visiting the region.
Discover the Jalapão Dunes
The Jalapão Dunes form the only dune area located within the Brazilian Cerrado. They arose from the erosion of the sandstone rocks of the Serra do Espírito Santo, with sand being constantly deposited in the same area by the action of the winds. The contrast between the golden tone of the sand, the blue sky, and the Cerrado vegetation creates a striking landscape. Known as the Desert of Waters, Jalapão is home to several waterfalls spread along the region’s rivers. The most famous is Cachoeira da Velha, the largest in Jalapão, impressive for its width and the force of the waters of the Rio Novo. Another highlight is Cachoeira do Formiga, famous for its intense green colour and its natural pool of crystal-clear water, perfect for swimming. Each waterfall offers a different experience, always surrounded by Cerrado vegetation and virtually untouched landscapes.
Be enchanted by the golden grass handicrafts
Golden grass is a rare plant found mainly in the Jalapão region and has become one of the greatest cultural symbols of Tocantins. Used in the production of bags, hats, jewellery and decorative objects, the material can only be harvested during specific periods and with environmental authorisation, ensuring its preservation. The craft tradition is passed down from generation to generation, especially within Quilombola communities such as Mumbuca. Buying pieces directly from artisans in towns such as Mateiros, Ponte Alta and São Félix is a way to support and value local culture.
Watch the sunset at Pedra Furada
Pedra Furada is one of the most photogenic settings in Jalapão and an excellent spot to watch the sunset. The sandstone rock formations feature large natural openings that frame the Cerrado landscape. Access is easy, with a short trail from the car park. From the highest point, visitors can watch the sun slowly disappear over the horizon, revealing the vastness of the region. Located around 35 km from Ponte Alta, the site can be visited free of charge and is set on private property with authorised access.
Observe the starry skies of Jalapão
Jalapão offers one of the most impressive night sky viewing experiences in Brazil. Far from major urban centres and light pollution, the region allows visitors to see thousands of stars with the naked eye and, on clear nights, even the Milky Way. During the dry season, between May and September, visibility is even better. The quiet nights of the Cerrado create the perfect setting for contemplation, astronomical photography, and connecting with nature. Bringing a camera and tripod is highly recommended to capture the grandeur of the Jalapão skies.
