Support the Tamar Project in Praia do Forte

Praia do Forte

Between tanks and aquariums, there are 750 thousand liters of saltwater with local animals and four of the five sea turtle species that occur in Brazil.

Getting to know the Tamar Project in Praia do Forte is diving into a marine universe of preservation and learning. The place is a true sanctuary dedicated to the protection of sea turtles and other animals in the region. Your experience will be unforgettable, where every moment reveals the fascinating story of these ancestral creatures that have inhabited the seas for millions of years.

Praia do Forte

Researchers from the Tamar Project arrived in Praia do Forte in 1982, when it was a small village with 500 residents. The relationship with the community gradually grew. Over the years, the research base and visitor center were consolidated. This was how the village ended up becoming a tourist hub.

The scenery is privileged, where the crystal-clear waters of the Atlantic Ocean meet the exuberant vegetation of the Atlantic Forest. The Tamar Project transcends its nature as a simple tourist attraction, becoming a tangible commitment to nature and future generations.

Inside the Project

Every year, thousands of sea turtles come to Bahia’s beaches to lay their eggs. The nesting season starts in September, and the hatchlings usually emerge between November and March. Many turtles choose to use Praia do Forte as a nursery. As a result, the Tamar Project demarcates and monitors the 14 kilometers of sandy beach to care for the eggs. But the work doesn’t stop there! The organization also rescues injured turtles and conducts important scientific research on marine fauna.

Visitor Center

The Tamar Project’s Visitor Center welcomes about 500 thousand people per year. And the tour is truly amazing! Upon entering the visitor center, you will be greeted by passionate guides, ready to lead you on an educational and inspiring journey. During the tour, you will receive scientific explanations about sea turtles and also learn various curiosities.

The space has some interactive and informative exhibitions that reveal the secrets of the marine ecosystem. They highlight the challenges faced by turtles and the importance of their preservation. You will also see some informative murals and even life-size replicas of the animals.

But nothing compares to the excitement of seeing the animals swimming in the various tanks of the Center. There’s even a place reserved just for the hatchlings! It’s one of the most exciting moments of the visit! Observing these incredible creatures, with their imposing shells and curious looks, provides a deep connection with marine life and awakens a renewed sense of admiration for nature.

Yellow Submarine

In addition to regular visits, you can explore a special area of the Visitor Center called the Yellow Submarine. It has six tanks with controlled temperatures, where animals from deep ocean layers live. Don’t be alarmed by the cold and darkness: the space was designed to mimic the natural habitats of these different species. It’s an amazing experience!

Turtle Hatchlings

If you visit Praia do Forte between November and March, you might be lucky enough to witness the turtle hatchlings. The Tamar Project always informs the region’s hotels and inns when the turtles are about to hatch. The excitement is so great that many people can’t hold back their tears!

You will also have the opportunity to participate in activities such as the release of newly hatched turtles. Witnessing these little creatures embark on their journey into the open sea is a moment of pure emotion and hope.

Each experience at the Tamar Project is an opportunity to connect with nature and to become an active part in the protection of the oceans and their extraordinary creatures.
