Travel by Boat Through the Rivers of the Amazon on a 6-Day Immersion

Alter do Chão

Itinerary starting in Alter do Chão includes experiences in the jungle and visits to local communities, creating proximity to the regional way of life.

When we think of the Amazon, the first image that comes to mind is the vast tropical forests and the imposing rivers that cut through the lush landscape. But within this vast green territory, there is a place that stands out as a true hidden paradise: Alter do Chão. Located in the heart of the state of Pará, the small village on the banks of the Tapajós River has much to offer visitors.

Natural Beauties

For nature and adventure lovers, there is no shortage of ecotourism options in Alter do Chão. Trails through the forest, kayaking trips through the igarapés, and bird watching are just a few of the activities available for you to explore the rich Amazonian biodiversity.

And you can go further, embarking on a complete itinerary to experience a deep encounter with the waters, the forests, and the people of this fascinating forest. You will navigate through three different river ecosystems: the Tapajós River, the Arapiuns River, and the Amazon River. Each one presents a different water color, as well as unique fauna and flora, influencing the cultures and traditions of its riverside communities.

Beginning of the Journey

This unforgettable experience begins in Alter do Chão, when you board a boat around 12 o’clock. From there, you will experience learnings and emotions you never imagined! To get in the mood for the trip, the boat will sail along the Tapajós River. The first stop will be at a charming river beach where you will be invited to take the first of many swims, sweet and refreshing, in the Para Amazon.

After the river bath, the boat heads towards the white waters of the Jari Canal, already in the ecosystem of the famous Amazon River. Get your camera ready, as the pink river dolphins may appear to accompany your journey. And it doesn’t stop there! The sunset over the waters of the Amazon will leave you speechless. Especially since it will be accompanied by local fruit drinks served on the boat.

The boat continues its journey, following the stars, to the black waters of the Arapiuns River. You will have the opportunity to taste the flavors of delicious Paraense cuisine, with appetizers and typical dishes, in a dinner prepared by the crew. After that, just admire the starry sky for a while and go to bed with the feeling of wanting more!

Second Day

The healing power of the Amazon Rainforest is the highlight of this second day of travel. You will wake up with the boat docked in front of the Atodi Village. After a hearty breakfast, you will walk through the forest in the company of the village chief and the shaman. That’s right, it’s the women who take the lead in this community and will lead the group through the forest trail, telling stories and sharing their knowledge.

Throughout the walk, you will receive a true lesson on the power of plants, with a demonstration of how plants and tree barks are used in the preparation of medicines. An incredible experience! And since you are in the forest, of course, the tour will end with a refreshing bath in a crystal-clear igarapé.

Almost at lunchtime, it’s time to return to the boat to rest, eat something, and relax. With renewed energy, enjoy a delightful canoe ride on the Atodi lagoon in the late afternoon. And the night will have a special dinner on the beach with the sound of Paraense music.

Third Day

Right after breakfast, you will visit a typical cassava flour house in the São Marcos community where you will witness the production process of cassava derivatives – indispensable food for the forest people.

On the way back to the boat, you can relax and enjoy the beach with drinks and the traditional and irresistible snacks. But if you prefer, you can hang a hammock in the shade of a tree and stay there.

In the late afternoon, our meeting is with the Coroca community, another important village in the region. You will visit the turtle lagoon and the turtle nursery of the species recovery project. You will also have a break for shopping at a store selling handicrafts produced by the community. At night, another special dinner illuminated by the stars!

Fourth Day

After sailing overnight, you will see the sunrise in the Tapajós National Forest. The boat docks in front of the Jamaraquá community for a long trail in the primary forest. The goal is to reach the famous giant Samaúma tree and satisfy the adventurous soul in one of the most beautiful igarapés in the Amazon.

Did you know? The Samaúma is a tree considered the grandmother of the forest as it can reach about 600 years of age. This Amazon giant is extremely generous, with long branches and a dense canopy. It is capable of carrying and sheltering various species of flora, birds, and other animals.

After the long trail, you will be back on the boat which, during the night, will sail to a special encounter at the Munduruku Village. The hosts will be waiting for a indigenous ritual. An experience that you will only live in the Amazon!

Fifth Day

The next day, the Munduruku people will invite you to visit the Bragança Village. You will have the opportunity to experience daily life, understand traditions, and even learn some essential skills for living in the forest. All this accompanied by conversations, body painting workshops, and making and practicing archery.

Throughout the experience, you will be led to deconstruct stereotypes of the indigenous figure to understand, in the current context of the world, all the complexity and importance of the role of the true guardians of the Amazon.

In the afternoon, the boat heads to one of the most beautiful beaches on the Tapajós. It’s time to rest and prepare for the farewell dinner!

Sixth Day

Wake up early to experience the magical moment of seeing the sun rise in the Amazon. The arrival of the first rays creates a true festival of colors in the sky and in the reflection of the waters. Take advantage to take your last swim in the Tapajós, as the disembarkation in Alter do Chão will be around 12 o’clock.

Stay tuned!

An experience like this needs to be on your radar! It can be experienced at any time of the year and you can choose guides who speak English, Spanish, and even French. Choose the perfect moment and experience this journey!
