4 Itinerary Ideas to Experience Brazil’s Festas Juninas

Campina Grande

When June arrives, Brazilian cities are filled with colorful bunting flags, bonfires, traditional rhythms, and unmistakable aromas. It is the start of the Festas Juninas (June Festivals) season, also affectionately called São João by Brazilians. For those planning to visit the country, this is the perfect chance to experience one of the biggest and most vibrant celebrations on the national calendar.

The festivities take place in various formats to suit all types of audiences. You will find everything from charming street and square celebrations to massive events in arenas, cultural centers, and large entertainment complexes.

To make planning your trip easier, we have put together four short itineraries (four to six days), organized by travel style. These suggestions cover some of the country’s most famous destinations and highlight what to prioritize in each city to make the most of your experience. Ready?

1) FOODIE | Corn, Sweets, and Typical Flavors (4-6 days)

The June Festivals are a real treat for culinary tourism lovers. This is the perfect itinerary to taste pamonhas (sweet or savory corn paste wrapped in husks), traditional cakes, and local sweets, all with the glow of bonfires and festival lights in the background.

The most strategic gateway is Recife, using the city of Caruaru as your main base. To extend the trip, the neighboring cities of João Pessoa and Campina Grande complete the experience with even more variety.

6 DAYS – CARUARU + CAMPINA GRANDE

Day 1 (Recife): Arrival and a relaxed evening to get into the festive mood. Try your first local street treats and start making a list of what you want to eat in the coming days.
Days 2 and 3 (Caruaru): Turn the event into a massive open-air tasting menu. Explore corn-based recipes and take the time to chat with the cooks at the stalls. Discovering the ingredients and the stories behind each dish is part of the journey.
Day 4 (João Pessoa): Enjoy the coast and recharge your batteries by the sea for the next stage of the trip.
Day 5 (Campina Grande): Here, the food variety expands, making for great nighttime photos. Prioritize delicacies like roasted corn on the cob, pamonha, and canjica (a sweet creamy corn pudding).
Day 6: The return trip wraps up with some final souvenir shopping and traditional sweets that fit right into your suitcase.

2) MUSIC LOVER | Forró, Xote, Baião, and Piseiro (5 days)

Ideal for those traveling to enjoy live concerts, love to dance, and want to understand the power of music in Brazil during this time of year. Good suggestions for soaking up this atmosphere are Campina Grande (in Paraíba state) and Caruaru (in Pernambuco state).

5 DAYS | CAMPINA GRANDE + CARUARU

Day 1 (Campina Grande): The event features massive stages and crowds singing together. Upon arrival, learn to recognize the local percussion instruments and see how the locals enjoy the night.
Days 2 and 3 (Campina Grande): Get closer to the smaller stages to see the sanfona (accordion) and the triangle up close. Look for areas where they play forró and xote—traditional regional rhythms meant to be danced in pairs. Accept an invitation to join the dance floor!
Day 4 (Travel): Heading to Caruaru brings a different festival format, usually with stages more focused on the streets and a closer connection with the audience.
Day 5 (Caruaru): The night is for dancing. Arrive early, pick a good spot, and enjoy the music until the very end.

Tip: Why not create a playlist to get into the travel mood? Classic forró, xote, baião, piseiro, and contemporary forró are some of the rhythms you should search for on your music app.

3) FAMILIES | Comfort and Flexible Schedules (4-5 days)

The June season is excellent for traveling with children or groups that prefer good infrastructure, easy access, and time to enjoy without rushing. You can sightsee during the day, have a quiet dinner, and enjoy the party at cultural centers and event spaces before the venues get too crowded.

Two options work especially well for this profile:

4 DAYS | ARACAJU: BEACH BY DAY, FESTIVAL BY NIGHT

Day 1: A relaxed check-in, a short walk along the coastline to feel the city vibe, and an early night’s rest.
Day 2: Enjoy the beach in the morning and plan your visit to the festival grounds right as it opens. The atmosphere is calmer, making it easy to walk around with strollers, small children, or larger groups. Explore the food stalls without long lines and find comfortable spots to sit and watch the party unfold.
Day 3: Repeat the formula: beach during the day, festival at night. Look for places with good music and let yourself be enchanted by the more playful, family-friendly dance performances.
Day 4: A peaceful return home, with time for one last stroll along the beach.

Or:

5 DAYS | BELO HORIZONTE: CITY BREAK + ARRAIAL DE BELÔ

Day 1: After arriving, walk through the central areas and enjoy an early dinner.
Day 2: Take the day to do an urban gastronomic tour. At night, make your first visit to the Arraial de Belô festival, taking advantage of the opening hours to walk around unhurriedly and choose the best spots to watch the attractions.
Day 3: Relaxed sightseeing during the day and a second visit to the festival to explore new foods or simply return to what you loved the night before.
Day 4: More time to enjoy Belo Horizonte at your own pace. Take the opportunity to visit the Central Market, the New Market, and walk around the beautiful Pampulha Lagoon.
Day 5: Return day, with time for quick shopping, one last coffee with a traditional pão de queijo (cheese bread), and a stress-free departure.

Tip: Prioritize areas with good restroom, food, and seating structures. Plan short breaks throughout the night, wear very comfortable shoes, and bring a light jacket for when the temperature drops.

4) ADVENTURE + CULTURE | Party + Heritage/Nature (5-6 days)

Adventurers also have their place in São João. This itinerary is ideal for those who want to alternate celebration with landscapes, tradition with nature, and heritage with movement.

5 DAYS | SÃO LUÍS: HISTORIC CENTER + BUMBA MEU BOI

Day 1: The itinerary starts with an afternoon in the Historic Center, recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. The golden light highlights the colonial architecture.
Day 2: Cultural immersion takes shape with a behind-the-scenes look at the festival, diving into the history, costumes, props, and crafts. Save the night to watch a full performance of Bumba Meu Boi (a vibrant folkloric tradition featuring richly decorated ox figures and drum beats).
Day 3: Deepen your experience with the regional cuisine during the day, and at night, attend different performances to see how each group tells its unique story.
Day 4: A free day to stroll and explore the city’s surroundings more deeply.
Day 5: Time to head home.

Or:

6 DAYS | CORUMBÁ: THE RIVER + BANHO DE SÃO JOÃO

Day 1: Arrival via Campo Grande and travel to Corumbá, in the heart of the Pantanal wetlands.
Day 2: The natural scenery takes center stage. The Paraguay River, the wide horizon, and the sunset set the mood for the festival.
Day 3: On the night of June 23rd, the event reaches its peak. Decorated floats carrying the image of Saint John head down the hills to the river for a symbolic bathing in the waters, accompanied by processions, chants, and music.
Day 4: Dedicate the day to enjoying nature and the beautiful ecological landscapes around the city.
Day 5: Dive into the local culture, taste typical foods, and capture incredible moments.
Day 6: Return home.

TRAVEL ESSENTIALS: WHAT TO PACK?

The basics make all the difference. Pack very comfortable shoes for walking and dancing. Always have a light jacket (June nights can be a bit chilly) and a light raincoat. Sunscreen and insect repellent are indispensable, especially for outdoor tours and riverside regions. Bringing a power bank is also highly recommended, as you will be taking lots of photos and videos.

If you want to get into the festive mood, an optional traditional touch works perfectly: a bandana, a discreet plaid shirt, or a straw hat instantly set the tone for the party.
