Arraial D’Ajuda – Learn Capoeira with One of the Most Respected Groups in Brazil

Arraial D’Ajuda

A symbol of combat and resistance, capoeira is a part of Brazilian cultural identity and is recognized worldwide.

Capoeira is undoubtedly one of the greatest cultural manifestations of Brazil and was recognized as Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO. Combining elements of combat, dance, and art, the capoeira circle fascinates everyone with the beauty of movements driven by the rhythm of the berimbau, agogô, and atabaque, musical instruments of African origin. Participating in a capoeira class is a truly transformative experience and a deep dive into history.

Capoeira Schools

In Arraial D’Ajuda, you can learn capoeira with one of the most respected groups in Brazil, Capoeira Sul da Bahia. Founded by Mestre Railson in 1987, the group is now present in more than 18 countries.

Your class will be held at the Associação Capoeira Sul da Bahia. Among the available options are individual or group classes, all suitable for children and adults. For women, the Association has a group composed solely of female participants. If you do not feel comfortable participating in a mixed class, this is an excellent option.

Under the guidance of the masters, you will learn the basic movements of capoeira. The ginga is the foundation of the fight, requiring coordination, balance, and strength. From there, the master will teach other movements, and by the end, you will be participating in a capoeira circle, connecting with the ancestry of this practice.

Learn more: A capoeira circle is formed by participants. In the center, musicians play instruments that dictate the rhythm and energy of the capoeiristas’ movements. The leader of the circle calls two participants to the center, and they interact with ginga movements. Throughout the circle, various pairs take turns in the center. The gathering ends with a final song and a grand celebration, uniting all participants.

A Dive into History

As you learn the movements, you will dive into the rich history and traditions behind this unique art. Capoeira originated during the time of slavery in Brazil as a form of combat and resistance. To avoid suspicion, the enslaved people adapted the movements to African songs, making everything appear as a dance.

For a long time, capoeira was marginalized and prohibited. Almost 50 years after the signing of the Lei Áurea – the document that abolished slavery in Brazil – it ceased to be considered a criminal act by the Brazilian Penal Code.

More than just a form of physical exercise, capoeira also promotes values such as respect, discipline, and self-confidence. Therefore, it is a holistic practice for the body, mind, and spirit.
