Discover the Architectural Complex That Is a UNESCO World Heritage Site

Brasília

Explore the architectural wonders and learn the history of this planned city, a landmark of modern architecture and urban planning.

Brasília is the first urban ensemble of the 20th century to be recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. On a tour of the capital, you will explore important monuments, dive into history by walking through the model superblock, visit museums, and enjoy a lot of nature.

Exploring the architectural works of Oscar Niemeyer

Start your day at the Praça dos Três Poderes (Three Powers Square). Here you’ll find some of the main buildings designed by Oscar Niemeyer: the Palácio do Planalto (Executive Branch), the Congresso Nacional (Legislative Branch), and the Supreme Federal Court (Judicial Branch).

You can join guided tours of these buildings! It’s incredible to get a close-up look at how each branch of government operates, enter important rooms and chambers, and leave with in-depth knowledge of the history of the Three Powers. On the official websites of each institution, you can find updated information on the guided tours. Just check them out!

At the Square, you can also admire the sculpture “A Justiça,” the Pantheon of the Fatherland, the Eternal Flame, and the National Flag Mast. You can also visit the Historical Museum of Brasília, which preserves the history of the capital’s construction.

Next, stroll along the Esplanada dos Ministérios to be amazed by the architecture of the public buildings. The Palácio do Itamaraty and the Palácio da Justiça are must-see stops. To finish the area, set aside time to marvel at the famous Metropolitan Cathedral of Brasília with its magnificent stained-glass windows and visit the National Museum.

Leaving the Esplanada dos Ministérios, the tour continues along the Monumental Axis, where you will discover more incredible monuments. One of them is the TV Tower! Upon reaching the top, you’ll have a stunning 360-degree view of the city—on one side you’ll see the Mané Garrincha National Stadium and the City Park, and on the other, the entire Esplanada dos Ministérios with Lake Paranoá in the background.

After enjoying the view from the TV Tower, the tour continues to two more architectural landmarks located on the Monumental Axis. The first is the Palácio do Buriti—headquarters of the Federal District government—and then you can visit the Military Cathedral of Our Lady Queen of Peace.

The tour also takes you past the Palácio da Alvorada—the residence of the President of the Republic—the Palácio do Jaburu—the residence of the Vice President—and the Urban Military Sector with its beautiful Praça dos Cristais. It’s a tour rich in history, culture, and architecture!

A Lot of History to Share Outdoors

After visiting so many monuments designed by Oscar Niemeyer, the guide will take you to explore Brasília’s model superblock. It’s one of Lúcio Costa’s most significant contributions to the history of urban planning worldwide! Walking through 308 South is like diving into Brasília’s history!

The superblock was meticulously designed, even in terms of landscaping, as it is the only one in the capital featuring a landscaping project by Roberto Burle Marx. The landscape architect added plenty of greenery, ornamental carp ponds, and squares for community gatherings. It’s beautiful to see!

As you walk among the pilotis of the buildings, you’ll see modern tile panels. Some of these were created by Athos Bulcão, an important visual artist in Brasília’s history. His works can also be found at the Igreja Nossa Senhora de Fátima in superblock 308 South, at the TV Tower, the National Theatre, the Brasília Airport, and several pilotis around the city. The tour also includes an amazing stop at the Athos Bulcão Foundation!

Museums

Brasília is also a city with many museums. Several of them tell the story of the city, such as Catetinho, the Museu Vivo da Memória Candanga, Casa Velha do Gama, and the Historical Museum of Brasília.

Near the TV Tower, you’ll find the Juscelino Kubitschek Memorial, which preserves the history of the president who envisioned and built Brasília. Visiting this museum is a true journey back in time. You’ll even find the car that the president used on display!

Right across the street, you can visit the Memorial dos Povos Indígenas and explore the diversity and richness of indigenous culture in a dynamic and engaging way.

Nature

You can’t talk about Brasília without mentioning nature. Besides Lake Paranoá, which bathes a large part of the city, the capital tour showcases the beautiful JK Bridge—designed by Oscar Niemeyer—the Dom Bosco Park with the Hermitage, the Botanical Garden, and the Zoo.

If possible, save Dom Bosco Park with the Hermitage for the end of the day. The sunset there is marvelous! You can sit on the grass and watch the sun bid farewell to the day over Lake Paranoá.

How to Book a Tour

There are several options for a tour of Brasília’s main attractions. You can opt for a private and more personalized tour where you choose the sites you want to see. Another option is to join a group tour with a pre-defined itinerary. In addition to daytime tours, you can also book a nighttime tour of Brasília, where you’ll see all the monuments beautifully lit up.
